How to find the right spare part with AI in 2026

Your car, boat or machine is due for servicing. You need a spare part, but you are not sure where to look or what it is called.

AI can help you get started. You can ask it for part numbers, replacement options and explanations of unfamiliar terms. Its suggestions may help you discover alternatives you would not have thought to search for yourself.

However, you should not take its answers at face value. AI may suggest the wrong part, miss suitable products or direct you to only a small selection of shops. A practical approach is to combine AI assistance with a search engine and online shops’ own search tools.

Does the old part have a brand name and number?

Start by examining the part you are replacing. It may carry a manufacturer’s name, brand or part number. Look for a label, an engraving or markings printed on the surface.

Take a clear photo of the markings and write them down. Pay close attention to letters and digits: O and 0, for example, can look almost identical.

If you find a brand and part number, try searching for them together on Google or another search engine first. This can help you find sellers of the same part, manufacturer information and possible replacements.

Not every number on a part is an orderable part number. A marking may identify a production batch or casting instead. If the results do not match the part you need, finding a number alone has not yet solved the problem.

Ask AI to identify alternatives

You can also give the information you found to an AI assistant. Include the brand, number and the equipment in which the part is installed.

For example:

I am looking for a replacement part. The old part is marked with the brand [brand] and number [number]. It is fitted to [equipment make, model and engine]. Identify the part and possible replacements. Give the exact brands and part numbers, along with the sources supporting each cross-reference. Clearly state any uncertainty.

If your AI tool supports images, you can attach a photo of the part and its markings.

AI suggestions can provide useful search terms and additional part numbers. At this stage, treat them as possible options whose suitability still needs checking.

What if you do not have a part number?

You can still make progress without a part number. You will need the most precise information available about the vehicle, engine or machine.

Useful details include the make, model, model year, engine code and serial number. For a boat, pay particular attention to the engine details: the boat’s make and year alone do not identify the engine installed in it.

You can start with an online shop that offers a vehicle or engine lookup. If you find a product listed as suitable, note its brand, product number and any original equipment numbers, often called OE numbers.

These details give you a starting point for further searches. However, a single shop’s fitment listing should not be treated as final confirmation if the application or product specifications remain unclear.

You can also ask AI for help:

I am looking for [part name] for [equipment make and model]. The engine is [engine model or code], the model year is [year] and the serial number is [number, if known]. Find the possible original part number and replacement options. If the information is insufficient, tell me what additional details you need.

If you do not know the part’s name, describe its function and location. A photo may help identify it.

Ask for confirmation from several sources

When AI suggests a part number or replacement product, ask it to check the information against, for example, three independent sources.

You can follow up with:

Check the proposed part’s fitment against three independent sources. Prioritise the equipment or part manufacturer’s catalogue. Provide direct links and explain exactly what information in each source confirms compatibility. Tell me if you cannot find the sources or if their information conflicts.

Three sources do not guarantee a correct answer. Three online shops may all use the same product data, and AI can also misinterpret its sources.

Open the links yourself. Check that they mention the exact proposed part number and your application. One precise manufacturer fitment record can be more valuable than several general shop listings.

AI saying “not found” does not mean a product is unavailable

AI may also suggest shops where you could buy the part. This is a quick way to get some initial options, but the list may be incomplete.

In practical tests, we have found that AI can report a product as missing from an online shop even though it can be found using the shop’s own search. This can happen even when AI is given the shop’s address and explicitly asked to search that shop.

“I could not find the product” and “the shop does not stock the product” are different statements.

Do not rule out a shop solely on the basis of an AI answer. To check a particular shop’s range, use its own search tool with the brand and part number.

If the search returns no results, also try the number without spaces or hyphens. Still check the product page to make sure it is genuinely the same number and the correct product.

Check prices and availability directly with the shop

Without web search, an AI answer may rely on information learned previously. Suggested shops, prices and stock information may therefore be out of date.

AI with web search can find more recent information, but this does not guarantee a complete or error-free result either.

Once you have possible part numbers, search for them yourself using a search engine. Also visit the shops whose ranges you want to check directly.

Even a search engine’s displayed price or stock information may be outdated. Check the final details on the shop’s product page and, where necessary, in the shopping basket.

Compare the same product first, then the alternatives

Price comparisons are clearest when you know the brand and exact product number. You can then compare the same product across different shops.

Alongside the price, consider delivery charges, delivery time, pack size and what is included. One product may include the necessary seals, while another requires you to buy them separately.

When comparing products from different manufacturers, look into their specifications as well. A claim of “premium quality” alone does not explain how one product differs from another.

AI can help organise this information:

Compare these products using information published by their manufacturers: [brands and part numbers]. What differences are there in specifications and package contents? Tell me if there is no reliable evidence supporting a claimed difference in quality.

The aim is to find a product that meets your needs and understand what you are paying for. A lower price alone does not prove lower quality, and a higher price alone does not guarantee a better product.

Confirm fitment before ordering

A similar appearance or nearly identical dimensions do not prove that a part is suitable. Its technical specifications must also meet the requirements of the application.

This is especially important when AI suggests a part intended for a different use. For example, any proposed interchangeability between a car part and a marine engine part must be checked for the specific products involved.

If sources conflict or compatibility remains unclear, ask the seller. Include the equipment details, serial number and photos of the old part and its markings. This makes it easier to obtain a precise answer.

Save the details for the next service

Once you have found the right part and confirmed its suitability, save the brand and part number in your maintenance records. Include the equipment or engine details and any verified replacement numbers.

Next time, you can go straight to comparing prices and availability.

AI can save time when looking for spare parts, but its answers need checking. Combining its suggestions with manufacturer information, a search engine and shops’ own search tools gives you a better basis for finding a suitable part and comparing prices openly.
